Autumn Pest Control Checklist for Your Home and Garden
As temperatures begin to fall, some pests seek food and shelter in houses, sheds, garages and other protected spaces. Use this autumn pest-control checklist to inspect likely problem areas and prepare before winter.
Look for signs of rats and mice
Check kitchens, lofts, garages, sheds and storage areas for droppings, gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, disturbed food or noises behind walls. Store food, bird seed and pet food in secure containers and clear spills promptly.
Seal accessible gaps only after considering whether pests may already be present. If control is needed, select the appropriate trap, bait or secure bait station and follow all label instructions. Shop rat and mouse control or read our guide to choosing between rat traps, bait and bait stations.
Monitor spiders and crawling insects
Spiders, silverfish and other crawling insects may be noticed in quieter indoor locations as the season changes. Place suitable monitoring traps along walls, behind furniture, in cupboards or close to suspected routes, following the product directions.
Explore silverfish and spider traps and learn where to place silverfish traps.
Check stored clothing and textiles
Before putting summer clothing into long-term storage, inspect natural-fibre garments and clean them according to their care instructions. Check wardrobes, carpets and undisturbed areas for moths, larvae, webbing or unexplained textile damage.
Browse clothes moth traps and read how to identify clothes moths.
Inspect food cupboards
Check flour, grains, cereals, nuts, seeds, dried foods and pet food for webbing, larvae or damaged packaging. Dispose of affected products appropriately, clean the cupboard and use a species-appropriate food moth trap for monitoring.
Tidy vulnerable garden areas
Remove badly damaged plant material where appropriate, check sheds and clean up fallen fruit or spilled seed. Continue looking for slug and snail activity during mild, damp conditions.
