Where to Place Clothes Moth Traps

Correct placement helps clothes moth traps detect activity effectively. Learn where to position them, which areas to avoid and how often to check them.
Where to Place Clothes Moth Traps

Clothes moth traps work best when they are positioned close to vulnerable natural fibres or in areas where moth activity has already been noticed.

Placing a trap somewhere convenient but unrelated to the source may result in few captures, even when larvae are damaging textiles elsewhere in the room.

WHERE SHOULD YOU PLACE CLOTHES MOTH TRAPS?

Position traps in quiet, undisturbed locations close to clothing, carpets or stored textiles containing natural animal fibres.

    Suitable locations include:

    • Inside wardrobes
    • Near drawers containing knitwear
    • In dressing rooms
    • Inside textile storage cupboards
    • In bedrooms containing natural-fibre carpets
    • Near stored blankets, rugs or soft furnishings
    • In lofts or spare rooms where textiles are stored

If you have already seen a moth or found damaged fabric, position a trap close to that area and inspect the surrounding textiles carefully.

WHERE SHOULD A TRAP GO INSIDE A WARDROBE?

Place the trap where it will remain undisturbed and where air can move around it. Follow the assembly and placement instructions supplied with the trap.

    A suitable position may be:

    • On a clear wardrobe shelf
    • On the wardrobe floor
    • Suspended from a rail if the trap is designed for hanging
    • Close to natural-fibre clothing without touching it

Do not bury the trap beneath clothing or place it where garments will stick to its adhesive surface.

Leave enough space around the trap for adult moths to reach it.

CAN YOU PLACE CLOTHES MOTH TRAPS IN DRAWERS?

Compact traps can be used in drawers when the product instructions permit it and there is sufficient space for the trap to remain open and undisturbed.

Position the trap away from direct contact with delicate clothing. Avoid overfilling the drawer or compressing the trap beneath garments.

If a drawer is tightly packed, remove and inspect the contents before relying on a trap. Larvae can remain hidden within folded clothing even when no adult moths are captured.

SHOULD YOU PUT TRAPS NEAR DAMAGED CLOTHING?

Yes. Damage provides a useful starting point when deciding where to monitor.

However, do not simply place a trap beside the damaged item and ignore the surrounding area. Inspect nearby:

    • Clothing made from wool, cashmere, silk or fur
    • Carpet edges beneath the wardrobe
    • Drawers and shelves
    • Stored bags, blankets and boxes
    • Dark corners and undisturbed gaps

The source may be located away from the first item on which damage was noticed.

WHERE SHOULD YOU AVOID POSITIONING A TRAP?

Avoid positions that could interfere with the pheromone or make captures difficult to interpret.

    Do not place traps:

    • Directly beside an open window
    • In a strong draught
    • Beside an air vent or fan
    • Next to heavily fragranced products
    • Where children or pets can reach the adhesive
    • Where clothing can fall onto the sticky surface
    • In a damp area that could damage the trap

Always follow the safety and positioning instructions supplied with the product.

HOW MANY CLOTHES MOTH TRAPS DO YOU NEED?

The number required depends on the size and layout of the area being monitored.

A single trap cannot reliably monitor several separate wardrobes or rooms. For a pack of three, you could position the traps in:

    1. The wardrobe where activity has been noticed
    2. A nearby drawer or separate wardrobe containing vulnerable clothing
    3. Another room or textile-storage area you want to monitor

Using traps in separate locations can help you compare captures and identify where activity is concentrated.

Do not crowd several traps together unless the product instructions recommend it. Spreading them between distinct storage areas usually provides more useful monitoring information.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHECK THE TRAPS?

Check each trap regularly, ideally once a week while investigating suspected activity.

    When checking:

    • Record how many moths have been captured
    • Note which room or wardrobe the trap is in
    • Check whether the sticky surface is dusty or full
    • Inspect nearby textiles if captures increase
    • Confirm when the trap needs replacing

Recording the installation date on or near the trap makes it easier to replace it at the correct time.

HOW LONG DO CLOTHES MOTH TRAPS LAST?

Plant & Pest Clothes Moth Traps last for up to 12 weeks after opening, subject to the conditions in which they are used.

    Replace a trap sooner if:

    • The sticky surface becomes full
    • Dust or debris covers the adhesive
    • The trap becomes damaged
    • The product instructions direct you to do so

When replacing traps, position the new ones in the same locations if you want to compare activity over time.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF THE TRAP CATCHES A MOTH?

A captured moth confirms adult male clothes moth activity in or near that area.

It does not reveal exactly how many eggs or larvae are present. Inspect nearby natural-fibre textiles immediately, paying attention to seams, folds, carpet edges and dark spaces beneath furniture.

Look for larvae, webbing, cases, shed skins and fresh fabric damage.

WHAT IF THE TRAP REMAINS EMPTY?

An empty trap does not automatically prove that the area is clear.

    Possible explanations include:

    • The trap is positioned too far from the source
    • The activity is occurring in another room
    • Only immature stages are currently present
    • The trap has expired or become contaminated
    • The fabric damage was caused by a different pest

Continue inspecting vulnerable textiles even when no adult moths are captured.

DO PHEROMONE TRAPS KILL CLOTHES MOTH LARVAE?

No. Clothes moth pheromone traps attract adult male moths. They do not kill eggs or larvae already feeding within clothing, carpets or stored textiles.

If captures or fabric damage confirm activity, combine monitoring with:

    • Detailed inspection
    • Suitable cleaning of affected textiles
    • Thorough vacuuming
    • Improved storage
    • Continued monitoring

USE TRAP PLACEMENT TO LOCATE ACTIVITY

Correct placement turns a clothes moth trap into a more useful monitoring tool. Position traps close to vulnerable textiles, use separate traps in different storage areas and check them regularly.

A rise in captures tells you where closer inspection and cleaning may be required. Continue monitoring until you are confident that activity has stopped.
