Signs of Rodent Activity: How to Detect Rats and Mice Early

During the colder months, rats and mice naturally move indoors, searching for warmth, food and shelter. The earlier you spot the signs, the faster and easier it is to protect your home. In this guide, we explain how to identify rodent activity, where to check, and which steps to take to remove them responsibly.

Why Rodents Move Indoors in Winter

As temperatures drop, outdoor food sources become limited. Rodents seek out heat, nesting material, and consistent food. Kitchens, utility rooms, lofts and sheds become prime spaces for infestations. Because rodents reproduce quickly, catching the signs early makes a huge difference.

    1. Rodent Droppings

Droppings are the clearest and most common indicator of rodent activity.

    • Mice droppings: Small, black, rice-grain sized (3–6mm).
    • Rat droppings: Larger, capsule-shaped (15–20mm).

Check around food storage, under sinks, near appliances, behind bins and in boiler cupboards.

    2. Gnaw Marks on Food, Wood or Cables

Rodents gnaw constantly to keep their teeth worn down. Look for:

    • Chewed food packaging
    • Shredded cardboard
    • Damaged skirting boards
    • Bite marks on electrical wiring (serious hazard)

    3. Scratching or Scurrying Noises at Night

Rats and mice are most active after dark. Listen for:

    • Scratching inside walls
    • Movement in loft spaces
    • Rustling under floorboards

    4. Nesting Materials

Rodents build nests from anything soft and easy to carry. Common locations include:

    • Lofts and insulation
    • Behind washing machines and fridges
    • Garden sheds
    • Air cupboards and boiler rooms

    5. Smudge Marks Along Skirting Boards

Rats often follow the same routes daily. Their fur leaves greasy marks along walls, corners and skirting boards. This can help you identify active runways where traps should be positioned.

    6. Unusual Pet Behaviour

Cats and dogs may become fixated on certain corners, cupboards or walls if rodents are present behind them.

How to Act Quickly and Responsibly

Act fast as soon as you see signs. Rodents multiply extremely quickly, especially indoors.

    Use Secure Bait Boxes

For active infestations, secure bait boxes paired with professional-grade rodenticide such as Vertox provide fast results.

    Try Traps for Low-Level Activity

Snap traps and enclosed traps help manage early signs safely. Always place traps along walls where rodents run.

    Seal Entry Points

Fill gaps around pipes, vents, external cracks and damaged brickwork.
